anti-foreign outburst.
At the same time it is perfectly obvious
to me after five years of very alose study of this
Province that an "atmosphere" exiate which is keenly
anti-foreign, and anti-foreign feeling is expressed
in various ways which, however trifling they may
appear to others, for me have a definite significance.
A common catchword in Chengtu is "first
oust the extra provincial, then oust the foreigner"
). The Szechuan hatred for
(
Yunnan and Kueichow first found vent in the
explosions of 1917 against Lo P'ei-chin and Tal
K'an.
The war ory was 'out with the extra-provincial"
and although the consummation of the desideratum
was incessantly delayed owing to friction between
the various Szechuan leaders, the main objective
was not only not lost sight of, but was accomplished
after a record which for sheer soriid low cunning
could hardly be beaten. Liu Te 'un-hou who had
borne all the brunt of the fighting, being an
adherent of the North, was not allowed to reap the
fruit of his victories, and Hsiung K’o-wu actually
allied himself with Yunnan and Kueichow to drive
him out. deiung, however, always bore in mind
ח
Szechuan for the Szechuanese", with the result
he rounded on his former allies appealed to his
old enemy Liu Te 'un-nou to come to the assistance
of Szechuan, with his help drove the Yunnanese and
Kueianou men out of the Province and ended by on OS
more expelling Liu Ta "un-hou.
